I am a professor in biotechnology and have been working on basic research (and some applied research) in enzymology, carbohydrate chemistry, and microbiology since 2001. I also have expertise in bioinformatics and structural biology, and have a broad research portfolio. My main interest is understanding how bacteria can break down and utilize carbohydrates, primarily polysaccharides. In recent years, I have also started working with pathogenic bacteria in fish and humans (with a focus on virulence factors) and bacteria that can degrade plastic. I also enjoy teaching and am responsible for two courses: KJB310 Protein Chemistry and BIO102 Applied Biotechnology.
