About this course

Dissemination of science and research is important to ensure that knowledge enters and is used by wide society effectively. Doing this well depends on the targeted audience and the way in which we communicate. In this course you will learn more about the topics of storytelling, the writing process, the identification of a target-audience, how to argue your case and audiovisual communication. You will learn how you can further develop your analytic reading skills and gain insight into how you use a selection of tools and techniques to improve as a communicator.

After finishing this course you will be able to:

  • Account for different genres and author tools within research and science communication.
  • Choose and use relevant writing-aids.
  • Reflect upon the role you hold as a communicator in society.
  • Contribute to the public discourse with science- and research communication both orally and in writing.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

In this course you will gain knowledge about topics such as storytelling, the writing process, target audiences, arguing your case and audiovisual communication.

Skills:

You will apply different writing-aids to help develop an idea into a finished work, and receive training in communicating in different genres and media. For instance, pop-science articles, opinion-pieces podcasts and talks.

General competence:

You'll learn to develop your own analytic reading skills and gain insight into using a selection of tools and techniques to become a better communicator.

    The teaching will be split into:

    • Seminars
  • Teaching support

    The course will utilize Canvas as a platform.

    The course responsible will be available for questions within office-hours and in seminars in-person.

  • Assessment method

    A portfolio consisting of three works, graded as pass/fail.

    The portfolio consists of a written work, either an opinion-piece or a pop-science article, a filmed lecture, and a short video.

    All parts of the portfolio must be graded as a pass, to pass the course.



  • Examiner scheme
    The course will use two internal examiners to evaluate the portfolios contents.
  • Mandatory activity

    It is obligatory to be present for the first lecture. You will be ejected from the course if you do not show up.

    There is additionally a requirement of 80% attendance, which is for both lectures and seminars.

    Studenter må melde seg til emnet innen 20 august, og sende et motivasjonsbrev på 200-300 ord til emneansvarlig innen samme frist.

    Lectures: about 10 hours

    Seminars: about 15 hours

    Hand-ins and independent study: 100 hours

  • Reduction of credits
    The course overlaps 5 ects with REIS202.
  • Admission requirements

    You must be a part of a bachelor-, master- or PhD-program at NMBU, have at least 120 approved ECTs and write a letter of motivation of 200-300 words to apply.

    The letter is sent on e-mail to the course responsible before the 20th of august with the string of letters "MINA350 motivation letter" included in the 'subject' field.
