The NMBU Sustainability Arena TOWARDS sustainable cities and communities announces funding for Master's students writing a thesis in related subjects at NMBU. Deadlines: 1 March and 1 October.

NMBU has established 5 Sustainability Arenas to strengthen competence, development, teaching, innovation and interdisciplinary work within NMBU's key academic environments over a 4-year period. One of these arena's, TOWARDS sustainable cities and communities, announces six scholarships per year, each of up to NOK 8 000.

These scholarships are for expenses related to travel, accommodation, course/conference fees, etc.

The scholarships are for students writing an MSc thesis at NMBU. Funding is awarded twice a year for disciplines related to the TOWARDS sustainability arena, specifically green technologies, social justice, health and lived environments.

What does the scholarship cover?

1. Travel expenses
2. Subsistence expenses
3. Research expenses (for example, translation of text)
4. Equipment expenses
5. Course/conference fees
6. Miscellaneous relevant expenses, such as support for publishing the Master's thesis (in a peer-reviewed journal or as a popular scientific article) during or after the completion of the  Master'scourse. 

How much can I apply for?

TOWARDS' Coordination Committee awards a maximum of NOK 48,000 per year in Master's grants. These are divided into a minimum of six grants of NOK 8 000, or more at a smaller amount.

How do I apply?

Master students can apply 2 times per year. 
Deadlines: 1 March and 1 October.
To apply, students must submit a short application (maximum 1 A4 page) in Norwegian or English by email to the TOWARDS's Administrative Coordinator, Pauline  Rutten: pauline.rutten@nmbu.no

The application must include the following:

  • Your full name
  • The name of your NMBU study programme, Department and Faculty (for all applicants if you are writing a joint thesis)
  • Your supervisor's name
  • A brief summary of your MSc thesis, including an explanation of why you are applying for the TOWARDS grant
  • An overview of estimated costs

What happens after applying for the TOWARDS scholarship?

Students will be contacted within 4 weeks of the deadline (1 March and 1 October). You will be notified if your application was approved, and the amount that successful applicants can receive. Students must present all receipts of expenses in order to be paid the grant after the expenditure.

Regarding the publishing of Master's theses, students must maintain and submit a time sheet in addition to sending a link or PDF of the printed article and the specified publication channel.
