The first year of the program is taught at either Göttingen University in Germany or Wageningen University in The Netherlands.

The second year is taught at one of 4 other universities. The study tracks with NMBU as a second year university focuses on Genomic Selection and Precise Phenotypes.

The overall vision of the programme is to deliver graduates who are experts in animal breeding and genetics, with different specialisations depending on their chosen study track. This will make them suitable in areas such as managing breeding programmes in low-income countries, conducting breeding value estimations as required by industry, responding to societal needs to combat climate change, or improving animal welfare through breeding. The ultimate goal is to train a new generation of graduates that is fit to respond to current and future needs of the animal breeding sector in a global context.

Partner universities:

  • Wageningen University (WU) the Netherlands
  • University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences (BOKU), Austria
  • Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Sweden
  • Paris Agro Tech, France
  • Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany
  • Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) Norway.

Job opportunities

Highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics are needed.

The programme is highly relevant for students who wish to work in organizations focused in the field of sustainable animal breeding.

Learning outcomes

You will bridge the gap between quantitative and molecular genetics which are needed competence in the future.

You can compose your own study plan with several courses in quantitative and molecular genetics.

Some recommended courses are:

  • Molecular Biology
  • Models and Algorithms in Bioinformatics
  • Genome Analysis - Methodology
  • Molecular Genomics
  • Animal Breeding Plans
  • Theory and Application of Inbreeding Management.

Admission requirements

The EM-ABG programme is open for motivated students with a bachelor degree or equivalent in Animal Sciences, Biology or related fields, who like to specialize in the field of Animal Breeding and Genetics.

The application must include a motivation letter. For admission to EM-ABG's double degree program and scholorship possibilities please see https://www.emabg.eu/application/

Application deadline 15 January 2021

For applicants that are interested in doing a single degree, our master in Animal Science can be a relevant program to apply to. More information about this master can be found here: Master in Animal Science

My involvement in EM-ABG provided me opportunities and network to work with credited professionals in the field which has been very inspiring for me.

Study structure

Students have to fulfill at least 60 ECTS at NMBU, including 30 ECTS for the master thesis. Students are recommended to choose a combination of courses within molecular genetics and quantitative genetics (statistics).
