Increasing performance and wellbeing (and avoiding burnout) in academia: Lessons from elite sports
Speaker: Henrik Herrebrøden, psychologist, author and PhD student at UiO http://www.henrikh.no/
Background: Many PhDs and Postdocs say they often feel inefficient and struggle to stay focused throughout an entire workday. Furthermore, statistics show that many early-career researchers experience burnout and mental problems, which has been associated with their high workload.
These challenges - maintaining focus and managing a high workload - are something elite athletes need to be experts at, if they want to win.
Better yet: many of their everyday habits can be adopted in academia.
Specific topics covered in this seminar:
1) "Periodization": How can we structure our (cognitive) workload to be more efficient and have more energy throughout the workday?
2) Focus strategies: How do we stay focused on the task at hand instead of the many distractions (both within our own minds as well as our surroundings)?
