Petition for the election of the rector

The question of whether we will have an elected or appointed rector at NMBU from 2017 will be settled at the next University Board meeting on the 10th of March. This is a very important issue for the future of the University.
The previous Joint Board (Fellesstyre) during the merger of UMB and NVH decided that we should have an elected rector from 2017. This decision was a crucial compromise to secure the “elected-then-appointed” rector that we have today. If the University Board settles for an appointed rector this will undermine the entire restructuring process.
We want an elected rector!
The main reasons being:
1. Democracy: The rector candidates run for office with a programme, and all students and employees take part in the decision on who should govern the institution.
2. A larger degree of legitimacy and academic foundation: The candidates for rector will come from the academic environments within the institution.
3. Autonomy: An elected rector will have more power to confront Ministry regulations and protect the University’s autonomy.
4. Greater political room for manoeuvring: An elected rector can make uncensored statements and cooperate with student movements, whereas an appointed rector will have to consult with the Board first.
The independence of the University is at stake. We are asking for your support.
