Seed funding for "Interdisciplinary collaboration for sustainability"

The Rector made available  NOK 1.5 mill in 2018, NOK 2.5 mill in 2019 and NOK 2.0 mill for internal projects. The final decision is concluded by the Rector, and is based on the poposal from a committee of 6 members.

The projects must contribute the realization of the NMBU strategy. The strategy's overall commitment is "Joint efforts for a sustainable future", and the focus on "interdisciplinarity" is central for the call.

Who can apply - the project duration and budget

Permanent and temporary employees in scientific positions may apply. The announcement applies to the current budget year; however, the project funds must be used within December 2021. Approximately NOK 300-500.000 per project can be awareded ie. 5-7 assignments in 2020.  Similar calls for proposals are planned for 2021.

The funds can be awarded internal interdisciplinary cooperation with the theme of increased sustainability

The seed-funding is one of several measures supporting the efforts of interdisciplinarity at NMBU.

Quote from the 2019-2023 NMBU strategy: "a number of the complex social challenges that NMBU work with, must be resolved through cooperation between communities with complementary competencies and perspectives. This requires that our researchers and students have solid academic depth within single disciplines. Simultaneously these skills are used to solve problems in collaboration with and across different academic environments - both nationally and internationally. It presupposes that we put efforts in to promote interdisciplinary cooperation, and that barriers are identified and removed."

The initiatives should preferably be projects that have ambitions to establish longer lasting internal collaborative alliances. The interdisciplinary projects may include integration of research, education and innovation, and involve a collaboration with society and companies.

Seed funding can be awarded to research activities, research training and innovative teaching methods. Suggestions for student active research, development of topics (including continuing education), program of study and research school, as well as "proof of concept" in the innovation process and/or workshop series for strengthened interdisciplinarity for increased sustainability. The innovation advisors that will help strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship activities, the development of concepts for the "experts in the team" and arenas for innovation may also receive funding.

The assessment criteria and setting committee

The assessment criteria will be I) relevance to the points about sustainability in NMBUs new strategy, II) originality III) Implementability  IV) the potential for the development of a long-term interdisciplinary cooperation. The applications will be rated by a committee led by the Prorector of Research and Innovation (leader of the committee), the Prorector of Education, 1 representative from the Research Committee and the Study Committee respectively - as well as representatives from the FIE and SA. The Rector makes the final decision. Application processing is expected to be completed before 15 May 2020.
