Funds for stays abroad at the University of Minnesota

Applications are processed on an ongoing basis.

• A travel fellowship of up to $5,000 will be available for PhD candidates and post doctors to cover some of the costs associated with transatlantic travel (Norway (NMBU, Ohio) and Minnesota (UM)) for research purposes.
• Will be prioritised for travel that promotes existing collaboration or that could lead to new interactions between research communities.

Peder Sather Grant Programme

• The Peder Sather Centre for Advanced Study supports projects undertaken by researchers at UC Berkeley in collaboration with researchers from eight Norwegian universities, including NMBU.
• The centre offers grants of between $10K and $25K. The money is available for one academic year.
• Grants can be used to support activities such as workshops, mini-conferences, virtual intellectual exchanges, ventures for investigative and pilot studies, activities such as PhD student exchange, long-term stays for researchers, collection and analysis of data and other core research activities.

The Research Council's individual international research fellowship

International research fellowships are primarily allocated as part of a project funded by the Research Council, i.e. included in a research project or combined with a post doctor or doctorate degree fellowship and a specific application type must be used. International research fellowships are normally granted only for research abroad with a duration of 3-12 months. Read more here.

Fulbright research fellowships

Fulbright offers research fellowships and student scholarships in the USA. The fellowships can cover any academic field. The minimum duration of the stay in the USA must equate to one academic year. Exceptions can be made for the students who are in the final phase of their PhD (stays with a minimum duration of six months can be permitted). The fellowship amounts vary from NOK 75,000 to NOK 150,000. 

Arctic Chair is a Fullbright Distinguished Chair programme. Researchers with 5-10 years' experience and a doctorate in Arctic biology, Arctic geology, Arctic geophysics, Arctic technology or adjacent fields with a focus on the northern region may apply for Arctic Chair grants with an accredited host university in the USA. There is only one allocation to a Norwegian researcher each year.

Fulbright also offers several programmes for Norwegian institutions that wish to bring researchers and teachers from the USA to Norway.

Graduate Research Opportunity Worldwide (GROW)

Opportunities for research stays in Norway for fellowship holders from the American National Science Foundation. Programme objectives: Establish a collaboration with fellowship holders in the NSF fellowship programme for involvement in the development and strengthening of relationships between Norwegian and American research communities.

JSPS - post doctor and guest researcher fellowship for Japan

Government fellowship for China

Each year, the Chinese government offers up to 10 fellowships to Norway for studies or research at a Chinese higher educational institution for advanced students and young researchers within all academic fields.

DAAD's PPP fellowship for researcher exchange with Germany

Scientific employees/research teams are invited to apply for funding for short-term stays in Germany for the purpose of initiating and developing joint research projects.

Aurora fellowship for researcher exchange with France

Scientific employees and research teams are invited to apply for funding for short-term stays in France for the purpose of initiating and developing joint research projects. 

Long-term institutional international collaboration" (LISI)

Funding for mobility between Norway and North America will be continued through the advertisement and funding of "Long-term institutional international collaboration" (LISI), which is a new application type from the Research Council. See here for more information.

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF)

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) provides fellowships to Scandinavian citizens who want to study or teach at an American institution. The foundation administers USD 500,000 to participate in study or research projects at graduate level for up to one year. ASF also provides funding to institutions in the USA wanting to host Norwegian and Swedish lecturers.

Norway-America Association (NORAM)

The Norway-America Association (NORAM) offers fellowships to Norwegian citizens for further studies and research in the USA. Up to 35 fellowships are awarded each year. The fellowship amounts range from approximately USD 2,000 to USD 20,000. The deadline for master’s and PhD fellowships is normally 5 January each year. NORAM also offers a number of other fellowships, such as "professional development award", The Alf and Bergljot Kolflat Fund for studies within architecture and engineering, "Ambassador Robert D. Stuart Jr. Fellowships" and "visiting lectureships". Please refer to the websites for information about applying. NORAM also offers a number of different fellowships for American citizens who want to visit Norway for research purposes, including the Marshall fund.

The Royal Society

Newton International Fellowships are funded by the British Academy and The Royal Society. The fellowship is given for two years to outstanding young researchers with PhDs for research stays at British institutions.

The Royal Society of Edinburgh

The Royal Society of Edinburgh funds research visits of 2-6 months at Scottish institutions via the Caledonian Research Fund European Visiting Research Fellowships scheme

Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research in collaboration with the EU's Marie Curie programme offers the Rubicon scheme. Rubicon is primarily aimed at promising young researchers wanting to establish themselves in the Netherlands using post doctor funds, but also offers possibilities for researchers from other countries wanting to undertake research at a Dutch institution. Funding is granted for up to 2 years.

Alexander von Humbolt Foundation

The Alexandre Humboldt Foundation has several different fellowships available to researchers wanting to spend time at a German institution, including multiple programmes aimed at young and experienced researchers as well as renowned researchers who are leaders within their fields. The Alexander Humboldt fellowship (postdoc) has ongoing deadlines and can be used by researchers up to a maximum of four years after being awarded their PhD degree.

Swiss National Science Foundation

Researchers and Swiss research institutions can submit joint applications for International Short Visits for visits with a duration of between one week and three months.

Chinese Academy of Sciences

The Chinese Academy of Sciences offers fellowships to visiting researchers and professors/senior researchers. The duration is one year with the option to extend. Researchers who are leaders within their fields also have access to the Einstein professorship program which funds lecture tours to China with a duration of 1-2 weeks.
