The project "SAFE: Sustainable aquaculture feed based on novel biomass from wood by-products" aims at developing a novel multicomponent microbial biomass as a salmon feed from Nordic woody feedstock. SAFE will develop a process for producing multicomponent microbial biomass enriched with three main components: a high level of ω-6 monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA/n/6 and PUFA/n/6) and ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA/n/3), carotenoid pigments and β-glucans. The project will work on developing a process producing the microbial biomass from wood-based materials, developing efficient extraction processes, for aquaculture feed and evaluate the biomass in fish health and growth trials.
SAFE will optimize both upstream and downstream processes for microbial biomass production. SAFE will be connected to several ongoing NMBU research projects related to developing processed for the production of , Foods of Norway (NRC-SFI № 237841/030), OIL4FEED (NRC-HAVBRUK2, № 302543/E40), BYPROVALUE (NRC-MATFONDAVTALE № 301834/E50 , LIGNOLIPP (NRC-BIONÆR № 305215) and it will be realized with the strong involvement of Norwegian industrial partners Borregaard AS, Cargill AS and Fortek.
