Emnets innhold:

Student-driven education (SDE) invites students across disciplines to collaborate in organising their own courses. Student driven courses (SDC) offer a reflective learning framework in which students actively shape their education through designing and running learning and teaching activities.

This is a blank canvas for students to plan, develop and implement a course linked to a particular topic they are interested in and want to academically explore, and gain academic credits for it. The aim is to address the learning needs and interests that cannot be covered by the curricula offerings at NMBU. Through engaging in pedagogic design, students will be able to suggest content, method, form of deliverables and modes of assessment as well as different types of collaborative work across disciplines and beyond the university. Students can sign up to design and lead a course individually or with a team of other students, and become student course coordinators.

Learning goals

  • Students will acquire knowledge and skills to generate a course
  • Students will gain confidence in and capacity to articulate their perspectives
  • Students will gain awareness and a deeper meta-cognitive understanding of learning and teaching processes
  • Students will reflect about their own roles in learning and teaching, and think of their own capacities as students

Learning outcomes

  • To develop a course plan linked to a topic of interest
  • To implement a SDC in line with the course plan
  • To facilitate learning experiences for others
  • To establish competency within the area of designing and delivering a course and learning activities
  • To establish competency on their own pedagogy and ability to communicate and collaborate effectively

The SDC learning activities can consist of various practices such seminars, workshops, self-study and reflection, either student-led or by guest lecturers.

There will be seminars, workshops and mentorship at the first week, a mid-course review session where each SDC will present their progress and a final reflection seminar before the assessment period where SDCs will organise a final presentation of deliverables.

Students will be responsible of:

  • Co-designing and developing course elements, from content to modes of assessment
  • Promoting and delivery of a course
  • Scoping cases and mobilising stakeholders (if relevant)
  • Moderating and facilitating contact hours, and making sure the content is delivered as planned in the schedule and adapt if necessary
  • Delivering regular updates to the Course Responsible regarding the progress of students, teams and the focus of study,
  • Giving guidance and feedback to students and teams

Course responsible will be responsible of:

  • Co-designing and reviewing the customised course plan, syllabus, and budget, to ensure they meet requirements set by NMBU
  • Co-creating and carrying out course assessment criteria with student coordinators
  • Ensuring milestones are met and the final presentations delivered
  • Consulting with student coordination team on a regular basis

Mentor will be responsible for working with the student coordinators on matters of teaching/learning approaches.
