Emnets innhold:
The course will give a theoretical background for understanding absorption of light in matter. Different examples that are relevant for photonics will be studied, such as energy converting materials, absorption in spectroscopy and interaction of light with detector materials. The students will perform practical laboratory projects where for each project they will obtain a theoretical background, go through the specific lab, prepare the lab, perform the lab work, analyze the results, and write a report or give an oral presentation.
Læringsutbytte:
The students will get a theoretical background and practical experience in fundamental concepts of light interaction with matter, in order to be able to describe theoretically and study experimentally the interaction of light and matter. The students will get knowledge in how to plan and perform an experiment. The students will gain skills in communicating scientific results, through reports and oral presentations. They will be able to analyze and critically evaluate various sources of information and use them to structure and formulate scholarly arguments.

The Course contains: 

  • LECTURES where central ideas, theory and examples are covered. 
  • LABORATORY EXERCISES that illustrate use and understanding of central concepts. 
Pensum:
The syllabus will be presented at beginning of the course.  
Vurderingsordning:
The execution of and reports on all laboratory tasks must be approved. All reports are sent to an external sensor. The sensor selects one report from each group. At the day of exam, each group presents the selected report in a plenum session.
