Emnets innhold:
The course will provide empirical knowledge and a theoretically informed understanding of European security, the role and politics of the EU, drawing on existing scholarly literature and debates about Europe¿s and especially the EU¿s role and challenges (or decline) in providing security, stability and development inside and beyond Europe¿s borders through: the integration process and institution-building; enlargement, partnerships and neighbourhood policies; civilian and military crisis management and post-conflict engagement; EU development policies; European security strategies and defence cooperation; and the EU¿s relations with other countries and actors (e.g. the BRICS, the MIST, the USA, NATO and the UN).
Læringsutbytte:

The course will go over 10 weeks (mid-September through mid-November) with 10 lectures (two hours each) , one or two of which will be held by a guest lecturer, and one 2-hour session organized as a seminar in preparation for the home essay. All teaching will be in ENGLISH.

The course seeks to give an advanced, graduate-level introduction to European security and the emergence and expansion of the European Union as a regional and global political actor. It will provide a good overview of the scholarly literature and debates on European security, of how the EU works as a political actor, focusing on its external action dimension, and of more specific issues of relevance to both, such as changing global power shifts, the economic crisis, and political crises or conflicts (e.g. the Kosovo and Libya interventions; the Crimean crisis). Those who complete the course should be able to grasp the main scholarly literature on and debates about European security and the EU as a political actor writ large.
