About this course

In the course, we consider damage to central forest trees in Norway. We describe the most important pests among the insects and fungi with emphasis on their life cycle, which parts of the tree they affect, and which conditions promote the damage. We also describe measures to prevent and limit damage. We also consider abiotic damage caused by physical or chemical stress, including climatic damage.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed the course shall have learned the following:

Knowledge

The student should have an overview of the most important causes of damage to forest trees in Norway.

Skills

The student should be able to recognize and interpret typical injury symptoms and identify the cause of injury. The student should also be able to provide simple advice on damage prevention and relevant countermeasures.

General competence

The student should be able to apply knowledge about forest pests in interdisciplinary assessments of forest management.

  • Lectures, exercises and excursions are all during three weeks in June.
  • The course has web pages in Canvas. The teacher is available for questions during office hours or by email.
  • Combined assessment:

    • Final written exam (3 hours) counts for 70%.
    • Tests of symptoms and causes during the course counts for 30%.

    All assessments in the course must be passed to pass the course.

  • External examiner is used on the final written examination.
  • Exercises and excursions.
  • Up to 8 hours per day lectures, exercises, excursions.
  • 5 credits overlap with FEP201 (previous version).
