Course frequency:Yearly. It is possible tp register for the course in the spring and autumn (parallell) terms.

Nominal workload:

The student is free to choose the number of credits (stp.) to work for, within the following limits:

5stp. - 30 stp. for M-BYREG (125 - 750 hours)

Teaching and exam period:

Evaluation takes place at the end of either spring or autumn parallell terms. Internship work is done according the the time schedule agreed on in the signed contract.

Evaluation of the course will take place in the term during which the internship is terminated.

About this course

The course offers the students an opportunity for an internship in a firm. The purpose of this is

1) for the students to gain practical experience and insight within his /her future profession outside of the university environment.

2) to use already acquire theoretical knowledge and skills and reflect on these in the context of this internship and the professional role they are assigned.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student shall acquire basic knowledge in/of:

  • the planning, preparation, execution and reflection on relevant professional working tasks.
  • The terminology of their profession and the body of information that is required to perform each task.
  • The procedures that are in use at his/her workplace and its quality control system.
  • The ethical issues and the current regulations for health, environment and security control (HMS) at the workplace.

Skills:

The student shall acquire the following basic skills:

  • Self reliance and independence in providing and agreeing on an internship contract.
  • Setting up time sheets to record work that is done.
  • Ordinary skills connected with the execution of the profession and the ability to tackle new tasks.
  • Writing a log which documents all executed tasks and work experience. Use this log together with relevant theory and discuss professional issues and challenges that are connected to these.

General competence:

The student shall acquire basic competence in:

  • Recognizing the implications of being a professional in his/her field.
  • Learning by doing
  • Independent work and cooperating as a team member, thereby contributing to solving tasks and problems within the internship firm.
  • Delivering a systematic and well-argued reflection on tasks and assignments he/she has been given.
  • Conveying to others the insights gained through the work he/she has participated in.
  • The learning activities will vary, depending on the number of students registered for the course.

    Learning activities will be regulated by the signed internship contract and thus be a cooperation between the programme director and the internship mentor. Activities will be documented though a log, and a final presentation and reflective dialogue with an internal examinor and fellow students.

    The internship mentor will confirm the students' time sheets.

    During the internship period, students will follow the working rythm of the internship firm and participate in the ordinary management of it in order to get acquainted with the working environment and tasks. They may be given responsibility for solving problems according the the firm's needs on their own or they may be asked to participate in ongoing team work.

    The course involves obligatory activities (see below).

    The extent of the required report, presentation, logs and course literature is decided by the programme leader. It may vary from one year to the other.

  • Canvas, tutoring by programme director and internship mentor.
  • The course is eligible for students enrolled in the BYREG programme, who have fullfilled at least the first semester of the programme.
  • Portfolio evaluation.

    Mandatory activities must be documented.

    An exernal examinor will review the course content. The examinor will also participate in a final presentation and reflective seminar organised by the programme director. The emphasis should be on discussing the internships learning outcome for each individual student. If such a seminar is organised, participation is mandatory.

  • An external examinor reviews the course content and organisation. He/she also reviews delivered reports and /or oral prsentation at a final seminar.
  • Min 70% participation in internship work. The rest of the time is allocated to work documentation in a log, reflective report (if required by the actual study programme) and presentation and participation in a final reflective evaluation seminar.

    Signed time sheets must be dlivered.

  • Students must have passed their study programme's first semester.
