Course frequency: Annually. The course alternates between Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The course will probably be given in Denmark in 2014 and Norway 2015

Learning outcome:

In general the studens should learn:

Critically reading of international  primary publications, as well as discuss the actual topics with other students and teachers

To prepare and present a talk or poster in an international forum, as well as participate in discussions on own and others projects.

Learning activities:

Literature Studies:Reading and discussing approximately 50 research and review papers before the the one week intensive course. The students will form study groups nationally, and these groups are  tutored by a teacher.

Preparation of an oral presentation or a poster

The one week intensive course will contain:

Lectures given by and discussions led by the invited international experts and the Nordic teachers

Student presentations:
Students will make an oral or poster presentation based preferably on their own research projects and related to the course theme.

Group Discussions are scheduled for the evening to enable the students review what they have learned during the day. Additional topics for these discussions include career opportunities in plant pathology, in a regional, Nordic, European, or global context.

Teaching support:
Literature seminars with teachers present. Guidance in poster and oral presentations. Intensive course with several international and Nordic teachers available during one full week.
Approximately 30- 50 reseach papers are read and discussed by the students before the intensive course.
Master degree that qualifies for enrollment as a PhD student in Plant Pathology. Basic courses in Plant Pathology and Microbiology.
Recommended prerequisites:
The theme for the course varies from year to year. Therfore, the recommended background knowledge will also vary.
Mandatory activity:
Active participation in the intensive course. Participation in dicussion groups. Abstract and presentation of lecture or poster.
Contribution and performance in discussions are assessed by Nordic teachers. Content and presentastion of poster or oral presentation are assessed by a group of international and Nordic teachers.
Nominal workload:
5 credits = 150 hours workload.

Type of course:
7 full days of intensive course. 70 hours: Lectures, discussions, lab. practicals demonstrations. Literature study and discussions before the course: 50 hours (discussion groups arranged in each country). Preparation of the students own presentation and evaluation of the presentation: 30 hours.

The topic for the PhD course in Plant Pathology varies from year to year. For PhD students it is therfor possible to get credits for participation in several of these courses.

Normally the topica alternate between beeing directed towards populations/crops/organisms (plants and pathogens) one year, and a molecular/cellular aspecter the other year.

The topic for the course in Danmark i 2014 is  " Genomic and transcriptomic sequences - a revolution in Plant Pathology?" 

The team of nordic and international teachers assess the students\' presentations and performance.
