Course contents:
A thorough indtroduction to the immmuune system, its organization and function. This is the basis for an in depth study of special conditions linked to the immunology of the mucous membranes, particularly in the gut, and the mechanisms involved in the development of food allergy. Special emphasis will be put on explaining the difference between immune-mediated hypersensitivities and other forms of intolerance reactions to food. The significance of food for efficient protection against infectious microorganisms, and the involvement of the immune system in the development of lifestyle diseases will be covered. Through lectures, supervised discussion groups and group exercises the students will get the oppprtunity to develop in-depth understanding and to penetrate key theoretical issues particularly relevant for their future careers and practise.

Background in cell biology equivalent to BIO100, background in biochemistry equivalent to KJB200, background in microbiology equivalent to BIO130.
Recommended prerequisites:
Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology equivalent to HFX201.
Mandatory activity:
The 2 first lectures are compulsory.
Standard written exam (3 hrs) with exercises picked from central parts of the curriculum.
Nominal workload:
Lectures: 30 hrs per semester, group activities: 60 hrs per semester, self studies: 210 hrs per semester, total: 300 hrs.

Type of course:
