About this course

The build up of the studio course is based on the project assignments for an new urban public plaza. Core themes are materiality and constructions in detailed design work processes. Work method varies from individual to group assignments, seminars and discussions. Main assignment is a detailed design in urban context from registration, analysis, through concept phase to detailed design and visualizations as an individual assignment.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Students will gain knowledge about different landscape architectural challenges and methods in relationship to projects on a detailed design level, especially within an urban context. They will receive extended knowledge in detailed design and site specific design in an urban context. They will receive in depth knowledge on appropriate use of materials, programming, environmental and sustainable solutions and reflect on the users of the urban realm. Students gain knowledge and reflect on their professional role in relationship to other professions and adjacent diciplines. Students get insight in contemporary national and international landscape architectural projects, and sustainable solutions within an environmental and social context. Accomplishments: Students will be able to master the different phases of a project. They will be able to accumulate knowledge and skills to design medium complex projects such as gardens, parks, and urban public spaces from analysis, to conceptual ideas and in depth design development to detail design. Understanding of universal design solutions are to be integrated in their designs. Students will be able to use relevant and contemporary tools, techniques, and forms of visual and verbal expression. They will be able to visualize and present a medium complex landscape architectural project, from concept to buildable, detailed design. General competence: The students will receive an overview of contemporary architecture and landscape architecture which can serve as inspiration for different design solutions. Through students individual work, their problem solving competence will be developed, along with their abilities towards an independent professional working method thoughts and reflection.
  • The course is based on lectures, seminars/group discussions, excursions and project case studies, executed individually and in groups. Learning by doing for all design projects is key for personal development. Case studies are presented visual and verbally and students make written reflections on their own learning processes and personal gain of new knowledge.
  • The students receive weekly supervision, in groups and individually. Canvas is platform for shared information.
  • An approved Bachelor´s degree in Landscape Architecture from another educational institution or an approved two first years and passed course in LAA224, Vegetation design, in Landscape Architecture at NMBU.
  • Independent work and project assignment are evaluated together with oral presentation.Graded A-F.
  • Course evaluation involves the examiner taking part in in-class, joint review sessions - concept phase presentation and final delivery with oral presentations . Semester assignments are approved by the responsible teacher.
  • Compulsory assignments. Students need to attend the review session and excursions. Recommended 80% attendence in seminars tutorials and lectures.
  • Lectures, discussion groups, workshops and seminars: about 110 hours. Supervision: 3-4 hours. Field work and surveying: ca 25 hours.
