HET212 Thermoregulation in Farm Animals and Ventilation in Animal Housing

Credits (ECTS):5

Course responsible:Knut Egil Bøe

Campus / Online:Taught campus Ås

Teaching language:Norsk

Limits of class size:Minimum 6 students

Course frequency:Annually

Nominal workload:125 hours

Teaching and exam period:Spring parallel

About this course

In the first part of the course there are lectures and calculation exercises on the topics of animal thermoregulation, climate requirements and calculations on ventilation needs. Different ventilation systems and relevant measuring equipment are dealt with. There will be excursions to herds with different ventilation systems. Finally, climate measurements are to be made in commercial herds.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student should have knowledge about thermoregulation in farm aninmals and their climatic demands. They should also have knowledge about the heat production and moisture production and the need for additional heating and different types of ventilation systems used for farm animals.

Skills

The studenten should be able to calculate heat- and moisture production, maximum and minimum ventilation volumes and heat balance and the need for additional heating in rooms for animals.

General competence

The student should understand thermoregulation in farm animals and their thermoregulatory behaviour

The student should understand how the air exchange rate and the air quality influence both production and welfare in farm animals

  • The course is a combination of lectures on the most important topics, practice exercises including calculation exercises, group work on climate measurements in farm animal rooms, colloquia where the teacher is present and excursions.
  • The person responsible for the course will, during the entire teaching period, be available at fixed times within the office hours.
  • One written exam: A - E / Ikke bestått

B1 Calculator handed out, no other aids

  • Researcher Grete H.M. Jørgensen, NIBIO
  • Participation in excursions, reports on animal thermal environment and ventilation are compulsory
  • Lectures: normally 2 hours per week, but there will be periods of exercises and group assignments.
  • Letter grades
