About this course

The course provides a thorough introduction to the calculation of the resource basis, technological solutions, and the relevant legislation for hydropower and wind power projects. Students gain practical knowledge through excursions, and theoretical knowledge through concepts, calculations, and modelling.

The topic has four main themes:

  • The energy system and concepts: Know sustainable development, sustainable energy system, and the national and global energy system. Calculation of power requirements, energy production, efficiencies, and capacity factors.
  • Legislation: Know the current legislation for the development of energy projects with an emphasis on wind and hydropower projects. Knowledge of the licensing process and associated impact assessment.
  • Hydropower: Know the practical structure of hydropower plants and the actors involved. Carry out calculations of the resource base, evaluate technological solutions, and perform calculations of power requirements and energy production for hydropower projects.
  • Wind power: Know the practical structure of wind power plants and involved actors. Carry out calculations of the resource base, evaluate technological solutions, and perform calculations of power requirements and energy production for wind power projects.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student will gain a thorough understanding of legal, resource and technological issues related to wind power and hydropower plants. The student will also gain a thorough understanding of the global and national energy system, and concepts related to the calculation of power and energy production. Finally, the student will gain an understanding of sustainable development and a sustainable energy system.

Skills: The student should be able to work with interdisciplinary issues related to wind and hydropower projects. This involves the ability to find relevant energy statistics as well as analyze, synthesize and present knowledge from disciplines such as technology, physics, hydrology and law.

General competence: The student will receive training in written and oral communication of interdisciplinary issues and research results.

  • The teaching is based on lectures, class exercises, semester assignment, excursion, class discussions, and self-study.
  • Canvas. During office hours, lecturers can provide academic supervision to students.

  • Combined assessment:

    • Semester assignment counts 30%.
    • Written exam (3 hours) counts 70 %.

    All assessments in the course must be passed to pass the course.

  • The external examiner grades all written exam answers and a selection of semester assignments.
    • Attendance at first lecture is mandatory (see TimeEdit). Travel ticket and accommodation for the excursion will only be available for students who attend the first lecture
    • Excursions.
  • Students who want to take the course must apply for admission in Studentweb no later than the 5th of August. After that, the places in the course will be distributed.

    Students who have been admitted to the course must attend the first lecture to retain their seat. If there are available seats, students on the waiting list will be admitted the day after first lecture. Travel tickets and accommodation during the excursion will only be ordered by the faculty for students who attend the first lecture or are offered admission to the course, and accept the offer, by the next day.
