About this course

This online course gives a basic introduction to Microsoft Excel, an essential computer tool used in business. When the students have got the basic skills in Excel, the lectures will focus on Excel as a tool in Managerial Accounting.

Basic training in the use of formulas, functions and data tables.

An introduction to basic principles and methods for Managerial Accounting, and demonstrations and practical exercises in making adequate financial models.

Presentation of models using formatting and graphics. Analysis and management of data, including external data, filtering and use of pivot tables.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate has:

  • knowledge of the different components of Excel
  • knowledge of how to build models to support business decisions

The candidate can:

  • Gather data for use in a model - register, cut and paste, import data
  • Structure base data - adjust formats, quality assurance, split data strings, use names in Excel
  • Analyze data - the four basics, simple statistical functions, sorting
  • Present data - format, adjust and make charts

Skills:

The candidate masters:

  • develop efficient and structured models in Excel
  • work efficiently with Excel
  • Digital lectures (videos, no streaming). 4 to 5 hours lectures each week. 2 weekly assignments, each adapted to half of the week's lectures. 2 sessions of 2 hours assistance with the assignments are offered weekly. Excercises in the classroom are given parallel to digitally, not compulsory.

  • Final written home exam: Duration: 3 hours. Pass / Fail. 100 % of total grade.
  • External examiner will control the quality of syllabus, questions for the final examination, and principles for the assessment of the examination answers.
  • Weekly multiple-choice test, The candidate must answer correctly on more than 50 % of the questions on 2/3 of the tests to take the final exam.
  • Video lectures: 4-5 hours per week. Excercises: 2 times 2 hours per week. The course last 8 weeks (about 2 months).
  • One-year study programme in Sustainable Business and Leadership.
  • 5 ECTS overlap with BUS133/BUS133F Excel for Business.
