About this course

The Master thesis consists of an independent research project during the last semester of the study.The Master thesis can be written as a monograph or scientific article. Students receive guidance from an appointed supervisor and co-supervisor (s). The supervision will ensure that students find literature, and get practical advice on data collection and laboratory work, as well as ethical guidelines. The exam is in the form of a student presentation and a scientific discussion about the masterproject.

Learning outcome

After completing the thesis, the student will be able to:

- Conduct an independent research project on a selected topic.

- Use relevant theories and research methods as a tool in research.

- Analyze and draw conclusions from an independent research project.

- Convey information based on the independent research project in writing and orally.

- Read, understand and make use of research litterature.

- Adhere to ethics guidelines.

  • Independent work under supervision.
  • The student is normally entitled to supervision of 40 hours (including the supervisor's share of the marking).
  • Requires admission to a NMBU master programme.

    Background must contain 80 credits in engineering sciences (nationally specified) that includes 30 credits mathematics, 20 credits physics, 10 credits economics / social studies, 10 credits informatics, 10 credits statistics and relevant programme courses.

  • Written assignment with oral defense, counts 100%.
  • The internal and external examiner will participate in the assessment of the thesis and the oral examination.
  • Approved Master`s contract between student and supervisor (s),with detailed progressplan, to be handed in at the Faculty before the project starts.
  • The student work full-time with the thesis in one semester.
  • Letter grades
